JiaSian - Shell Collection

The JiaSian Fossil Museum holds not only the local fossils from Taiwan but also has a collection from around the world. With the recent opening of Mainland China a lot of fossils from the age of dinosaurs are now available in Taiwan. Dinosaur eggs seem especially popular. It's illegal to export these from China, but the new capitalists have learned their lessons well and everything of value is for sale.

There are some nice ammonite specimens but even in the display cabinet they are dying after million years in the ground.

The picture of the same specimen in the Museum catalog is predisintegration.

As a bonus, the JiaSian Fossil Museum is a two story building, on the second floor is about 100 display cabinets of shells.

The shells are nicely displayed and cataloged but there is no sign on the first floor saying that there is anything on the second floor. Also the lights on the second floor have to be turned on by the visitors and turned off when they leave. To me, it's surprising that such a nice place has so few visitors. Here are some of the shells.

  1. The shells are remarkable! Keep the photos coming, please. The fossils remind me of what I have seen in the Tucson show in February. I also got to see some dinosaur eggs there.
